Mrtn (Maarten) van der Horst (1961) is a self-taught artist. Since 1980, he was primarily involved in painting, but found that the sterile white of the canvas provided very little inspiration. After painting on wood for a while he increasingly switched to creating assemblages which can best be described as “junk art”. By 1997, this developed into a style that he called neo-animism: assemblages built up of partially decayed and mostly natural materials such as (drift)wood, rusty iron, stone, and bone. He also started making collages in 2008, digitally at first, but soon after producing many analogue collages, both in colour and in black and white or a combination of the two. Is also co-founder of the analogue collage collective Cut & Paste Art (2010).
